Current Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) Board of Education Member, Amanda Morrell has lived within the school district for 27 years with her husband and their two sons. She has a degree in landscape architecture from Purdue University and is employed as a Community Planner for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Both of Amanda’s children attended SVUSD schools; one graduated in 2015 from El Toro High School after attending Portola Hills Elementary and Serrano Intermediate School, and the other attended Portola Hills Elementary School before attending the public charter school, Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) for intermediate and high school. Amanda spent many years “in the trenches” as an active parent volunteer within both traditional and charter school education models. From this experience, Amanda has gained the essential insight and expertise to be a committed champion of public education and ALL students. Amanda is dedicated to putting the needs of our students first.

Prior to her appointment to the SVUSD Board of Education, Amanda put her facilities planning expertise to work without compensation serving as Member of the Citizens’ Oversight Committee (COC) to monitor expenditures on the $180 million Measure B Facility Improvement Bond for SVUSD schools. With the committee’s oversight, all 36 schools throughout our district received major facility improvements or enhancements with 550 modernized classrooms, 60 new classrooms, 11 new multipurpose rooms, 3 new band rooms, 8 new restrooms buildings, 25 new shade structures, 24 new playgrounds, 2 new kitchens, 3 new gymnasiums, athletic complex improvements, 34 field renovations, 1 two-story parking structure, and 8 new parking lots. In addition, in her role with the COC, Amanda provided oversight of renovations including fixing leaky roofs, asbestos removal, plumbing/sewer upgrades, modernizing science labs to allow for advanced courses required by colleges and universities, upgrading security systems, phone systems, lighting, and heating/ventilation systems, and upgrading electrical wiring for technology.

As Lake Forest’s City Parks and Recreation Commissioner from July 2006 to February 2013, Amanda helped develop a 5-year Parks Strategic Master Plan and oversaw the implementation of more than $8 million in facility improvements at 14 parks within the City of Lake Forest including developing a universally accessible playground so that children of all abilities could play together at Pittsford Park. In addition, Amanda advocated for the increasing the city’s park lands by about 25% and served as a hands-on contributor to the design of the new 85-acre Lake Forest Sports Park.

Amanda has been a parent volunteer in SVUSD for 16 years, devoting countless hours assisting teachers both in and out of the classroom, advocating for additional teacher and student resources as PTA President, as well as raising funds continuously for student programs and essential school services. Amanda’s passion, in particular, is the inclusion and availability of classes in the arts, sciences and technology and athletics for all students in our schools.

She has received three awards of “Appreciation for Outstanding Service” for her volunteer efforts within SVUSD, a “Volunteer of the Year Award” from Portola Hills Elementary School, and the Boy Scouts’ Saddleback District Extra Miler Award for going the “extra mile” in making the Scouting experience better for Scouts. Amanda has completed four of five Masters in Governance program courses offered by the prestigious, state-wide California School Boards Association, which cover topics including: effective student learning and achievement, setting direction, policy review, school finance and human resources, increasing a base of knowledge she applies in her role as a Board of Education member.

Amanda is also an active volunteer in the greater community. As a Scout leader, vacation bible school co-leader, AYSO soccer and Little League team mom, hands-on worker in the collection of items for local food banks, server for the homeless at Mercy House in Santa Ana, and Habitat for Humanity home builder, Amanda believes strongly in leading by serving and giving back to her community. Whether it’s removing invasive species from our local parks, picking up trash, or volunteering at the pancake breakfast at Esperanza Special Education School or the American Legion Post 862, she tries to live by the humble words of Helen Keller: “I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

Funding for Schools

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?

Answer from Amanda Morrell:

Review of the Local Control and Accountibility Plan should be performed by all Stakeholders (including Parents, Teachers, and District Administration). The stakeholders need to be involved in the plan creation, definition of the performance matrices, and review and determination of performance and actions to be taken to correct/improve that performance.

I believe in servant leadership and giving back to the community through public service. I believe strongly that our children need to have advocates working on their behalf. They are the only special interest that I represent.
